Should it be cooked and with water or milk?

It is recommended to cook oatmeal before feeding it to your dog. Cooking helps break down the starches, making it easier for your pup to digest. While water is the preferred choice for cooking oatmeal, you can also use low-fat milk if your dog isn’t lactose intolerant. However, it’s important to note that milk should only be given in moderation.
I only use water for my two dogs. For our human breakfast we like to add vanilla and raisins both of which are big no for any dog.  So if you make the plain oatmeal with water you are good.
I like to cook enough oatmeal to last about a week.

Should it be mixed or what can you mix it with?

While oatmeal can be served plain, adding some variety can make it more enticing for your furry friend. You can mix in small amounts of lean protein, such as cooked chicken or turkey, to enhance the flavor and provide additional nutrients. Avoid adding any seasonings, sweeteners, or artificial additives, as they can be harmful to dogs.
Below is my recipe but its the same as on the Quaker Oats box.
2 1/2 cups of water to a simmer.
Add 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal to this simmering water, stirring as you add the oats. Continue stirring until fully combined.
Cook for 7 – 8 minutes, until oatmeal is thickened and oats have absorbed the water.
Then add different items to change it up a bit for a treat mix.
  • Peanut butter
  • Carrots chopped
  • Fruit such as apple cored, banana , blueberries, strawberries.
You can then keep it plain and serve it with your dogs proteins for a great meal  or store it and give it as treats. I use the storage container below. Only because they come in such handy sizes.  I keep everything from left overs to our pups oatmeal and treats in them. I Love the way they stack too.
