Raw Food vs. Kibble: two popular choices when it comes to feeding our furry friends.

Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and as a responsible pet owner, it’s essential to understand the pros and cons of each option. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits and drawbacks of feeding dogs raw/Freeze dried food and kibble, helping you make an informed decision about what’s best for your canine companion.

Now the good part Raw food Vs Kibble.

1. Raw Food

a. Pros:

   i. Nutritional Value: Raw food diets often consist of fresh, unprocessed ingredients, including raw meat, bones, fruits, and vegetables. Advocates argue that this provides a more natural and nutrient-rich diet for dogs.

ii. Dental Health: Chewing on raw bones can help clean your dog’s teeth and promote better oral health.

iii. Improved Digestion: Some dogs with sensitive stomachs or food allergies may benefit from a raw food diet, as it eliminates potential allergens and additives found in commercial kibble.

iv. Shinier Coat and Healthy Skin: Supporters of raw food diets claim that they can contribute to a healthier coat and skin for dogs.

b. Cons:

   i. Nutritional Imbalance: Preparing a balanced raw food diet can be challenging, as it requires careful consideration of the right proportions of meat, bones, organs, and other ingredients. Without proper planning, dogs may not receive all the necessary nutrients.

ii. Food Safety Concerns: Raw food carries a higher risk of bacterial contamination, which can pose health risks to both dogs and humans. Proper handling, storage, and hygiene practices are crucial.

iii. Cost and Convenience: Raw food diets can be more expensive and time-consuming to prepare compared to commercial kibble. It may require sourcing quality ingredients and investing in additional equipment.

2. Kibble Diet:

a. Pros:

   i. Convenience: Commercial kibble is readily available, easy to store, and requires minimal preparation. It offers a convenient feeding option for busy pet owners.

ii. Nutritional Balance: Reputable brands of kibble are formulated to meet the nutritional needs of dogs, providing a balanced diet with essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins.

iii. Affordability: Kibble is often more cost-effective than raw food diets, especially when considering the long-term expenses.

b. Cons:

   i. Processing and Additives: Some commercial kibble may contain fillers, artificial additives, and preservatives that are less desirable for a dog’s overall health.

ii. Allergies and Sensitivities: Certain dogs may develop allergies or sensitivities to specific ingredients commonly found in kibble, such as grains or certain proteins.

iii. Dental Health: Kibble is less effective at cleaning teeth compared to raw bones or other dental chews.

Raw Food vs. Kibble:

Choosing between a raw food diet and kibble for your dog requires careful consideration of their individual needs, your lifestyle, and the resources available to you. Both options have their pros and cons, and it’s important to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best diet for your furry friend. Remember, regardless of the chosen diet, providing a balanced and nutritious meal is crucial for your dog’s overall health and well-being. That really goes with saying.

While we travel quite a bit,  feeding raw does not work for us. What I do, is use kibble and mix raw when available. I have found Purina or Fromm are two of the best kibble made and endorse it.  Tip: I do not use one brand continually, I rotate between  brands.
